It’s fair to say that in the past electric cycles haven’t had style on their side, with large, bulky frames and heavy batteries making them clumsy and awkward by nature. In comparison the new X-bykes look and feel like a well designed mountain bike, bringing all the benefits of modern cycle technology with the added bonus of a 250 w motor powered by a compact Lithium Lite 36v battery. At a glance you wouldn’t even realise the X-byke was an electric bike at all.
The battery is cleverly designed to slot into the water bottle holder – disguised in fact as a water bottle, and weigh just 2.5kg which not only removes the main weight barrier of other heavy electric bikes, but if desired allows the rider to easily carry a spare - therefore doubling the range.
Founded in 1999 and having sold over 30,000 electric bikes in the UK and overseas, Powabyke have focused their efforts for the past 10 years on overcoming the problems traditionally associated with electric cycles. With a modern, smart, lightweight design, the whole bike, complete with battery weighs under 25kg compared with early electric bikes which weighed close to 40kg. With a sleek frame the new X-byke is easy to lift, store and transport.
Designed with both commuting and leisure purposes in mind, the X-bykes are available as either a 6-speed X6 model, or a 24-speed X24 model. The 6-speed version is also available with the European preferred low step through frame.
The X-bykes give the rider a range of about 20 miles in PAS mode – a viable, efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to the car that allows the cyclist to cover greater distances with ease.
Nick Child, Managing Director of Powabyke says that the new X-bykes are a cycling evolution, progressing alternative transport into something viable for all. “Cycling for fun has always been popular, but when it comes to commuting by bike, people are not always so keen to get onto two wheels. We can change that, offering the rider power assistance when it’s needed, and the option of pedaling for some gentle exercise if they feel like it.
“However, commuters are often put off by the weight of an electric bike, which just puts up another barrier to embracing them. The X-byke removes this barrier due to its revolutionary light battery and aluminum frame.”
